He unlearned various things about culture and added new ideas as he went along. And he became a part of a certain branch of English literature which depends heavily on Joyce, Pound, Eliot and a few other central figures. His great contribution there was to take some of the insights of people like Pound and Joyce and the Cubists in painting, and apply them to mass culture. But I had the feeling that he was always learning and inwardly challenging what he learned before. He was always
